Hair Extensions: Are They Right for You?

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase hair extensions? Young girls? Longer locks? Hollywood? While all these can and do apply, it may surprise you to know that there are many benefits to extensions you may not be aware of, such as:
  • adding a different texture to your hair than what you already have
  • adding color without the use of chemicals
  • adding length and volume to thinning hair
  • the versatility of an instant new style without a cut or regrowth required
Below are some answers to some common questions regarding hair extensions.

What, exactly, are hair extensions? And what are they made of?

Hair extensions, also known as hair integrations or hair weaves, are sections of hair that are affixed to existing hair to add length and fullness. They can be made of either synthetic or real human hair, though either type is applied, of course, to look and behave like the real thing.

How are extensions put in?
There’s more than one way to apply extensions. They can be clipped, taped, glued, or sewn onto your existing hair. The method is typically determined by the stylist, as well as the brand your salon uses. Ashley Sinclair, owner of East Main, uses the tape method using real hair. “They are comfortable for clients and easy on the hair,” she says.

How long does it take to get hair extensions?
Depending on the desired style and the density of your hair, it can take anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours to have your extensions put in initially. Consult your stylist for a more definitive time.

How long do extensions last?
You can expect extensions to last between six to eight weeks, depending on the style and how you care for your extensions, which brings us to the next question…

How do you care for extensions?
Just like your own hair, extensions require maintenance. Before bed, extensions should be brushed through and long extensions should be braided every night. It’s recommended not to wash them every day. No heat should be applied where the extensions attach and no oils or conditioners should be applied directly on the scalp.

What are some added benefits of hair extensions?
When it’s time for a trim, your extensions can be left in and trimmed with the rest of your hair—there’s no need to remove them. In addition, when you’re ready to move on to another style, they can be removed and used again next time you’re ready which can cut down on cost.

How much do extensions cost?
First-time application generally runs between $350-$550 which includes the cost of the hair itself, but many clients agree that the added volume and long-lasting versatility are well worth the expense.

I admire what you said about extensions and how they can either be taped or glued in. I would say that straight hair extensions are perfect for fancy events. My wife wants to get some extensions, so I'll help her find the best beauty store in town to work with.

It's good that you point out that hair extensions are a great method for adding length and volume to hair. My girlfriend is unhappy with how thin her hair looks, so I'm considering taking her to a salon to get hair extensions. I'm going to look for a good salon in our area that offers hair extensions.

It helped me a lot when you explained that it can take up to 2 hours to have your hair extensions put in the first time, so I can plan how long I should take from my day to go to a specialist and have it done. Recently I cut my hair by myself, and I did not realize that it ended up being shorter than I wanted it to be, which does not look good for the shape of my face. It will be good for me to start looking for local services that could help me get long hair again, especially so I can make sure that I look good for my sister's wedding.

I'm tired of my short hair; that's why I've been planning to have hair extensions. I'm glad you shared this because I never knew that aside from adding volume to my hair, adding color will also be possible. It's also great to learn the extensions will last for at least six weeks.

It's awesome that this article points out that hair extensions offer an easy way for women to achieve a new style. My wife has been talking about wanting to change her style lately, so I'm thinking about recommending that she go to a salon to get hair extensions. I'm going to search for a good salon that does hair extensions in our area to recommend.

It's cool that you mention that hair extensions provide a quick way to update your look. My girlfriend is always going to the salon to get her hair done, so I'm thinking about recommending hair extensions to her. I'm going to look for a good business that sells hair extensions to recommend.

My sister has been thinking about getting a hair extension for her hair, so that she can put it into a ponytail. She would really like to get some help from a professional, so that they can be hand-tied. It was interesting to learn about how they should last for 6-8 weeks if they are taken care of and brushed every night.

It really helped when you mentioned how a hair extension is a popular way to add length and volume to your hair. My little sister's birthday is coming up, and I'm thinking about what to get her. Lately, she's into changing her hairstyles, and so I thought I could gift her like a wig or hair extensions. I'm obviously clueless about what are wigs and hair extensions and how they work, so your article it's like a lifesaver to me. I'm grateful for your information about what are hair extension and their benefits. I'll be sure to consider them for my sister's gift.

I appreciated it when you shared that hair extensions can help add length and volume to your thinning hair. A friend of mine just mentioned the other day that she is worried about her hair as she has noticed that there are a few bald spots that make her feel less confident if anyone sees them. I will suggest to her looking for a reliable place where she can have hair extensions done.

I want to make my hair look a bit longer, but I'm not sure how to go about it. It makes sense that I might want to have hair extensions put in for now! That seems like a great solution while I wait for my hair to naturally grow out. I'll be sure to go to a nice salon for this, because they would be able to make it look nice.

My daughter wants extensions. I'll let her know that they last about six to eight weeks. That should help her plan when to get them if she ends up doing that.

Thanks for pointing out that when looking for hair extensions, it is best that we seek a professional help as they are skilled. As such, they will be able to provide us with quality service. I will look for a professional hairdresser to have my weaves made.

Extensions can be good for your hair. If you decide to add length and choose high-quality, carefully-applied extensions, you can save your natural hair from damage. Thanks for this! Love your blogs actually. A colleague recommended me this site and it’s great.

It got me when you said that there are two types of extensions, the synthetic and the real one, and they can both behave like our natural hair. I plan to go to a hair salon I can find this weekend to get some attached to my head. It will finally solve my problem of getting enough volume to make my head look better due to being small.

I appreciate you mentioning that to increase length and fullness, hair extensions—also referred to as hair integrations or hair weaves—are attached to existing hair in portions. I'd like to add hair extensions to my hair for my wedding. To make my hair longer, I'll locate a salon hair extension specialist.

Thank you for letting me know that hair extensions last for about six to eight weeks. My friend should know this since she's planning to get a hand-tied hair extension. I should advise her to look for a salon with vast experience in applying hair extensions.

Thanks for helping me understand that hair extensions would be in two materials such as the synthetic or real ones. I would love the real ones when I book a hair appointment here in Saskatoon this weekend. My goal is to add more volume to my head, since I really have thin locks ever since I was a kid.
